Michael
Ling has been coaching the sport of volleyball for over 11 years. He has been
involved in coaching at the High School, Club, Provincial Team, University,
and National Team levels. Michael initially began coaching at the high school
level in Beaumont, Alberta before he continued his coaching pursuits at WP Wagner
High School in Edmonton, Alberta under the support and guidance of Carsten Stanjeck
(now at STS). Throughout Michael's coaching career he has also taken an active
role both head coaching and assistant coaching at the club volleyball level.
Michael initially founded a Tier II club program named the Beaumont Bandits
and eventually moved to the Northern Alberta Volleyball Club (NAVC) where he
has coached at the Midget level for 6 years, and last year (2002) made the step
up to Head Coaching the NAVC Pandas Gold Juvenile Women, where again he will
be coaching this upcoming season (2003). Mike has also coached at the South-East
Edmonton Volleyball Club (SEEVC) for three years, which was founded by Carsten
Stanjeck. Within Michael's coaching career, he has had the opportunity to assist
in the selection process of various Provincial Teams for Alberta, which has
spanned over at least 5 years.
In 2000, Michael joined the University of Alberta Pandas Volleyball Team as an Assistant Coach and is currently continuing his work with the Pandas Volleyball program in the future.
In the summer of 2001, Michael was appointed to the Canadian National Team Program as an Assistant Coach of the female Youth National Team. Mike has worked with Team Canada Youth Team for the past two summers. Last summer, seeing the team off for the NORCECA Youth Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah (USA). Michael has also expanded his coaching regimen to assist with the Team Canada Senior Women as well over the summers of 2001 and 2002. Michael is also a regional Scout in Alberta for the National Team programs.
Presently, Michael is a teacher at Highlands Junior High School in Edmonton. Michael has been at Highlands the past three years, where he teaches Mathematics and Physical Education. Also, he is helping to prepare the U of A Pandas for the upcoming playoff season in Canada West and working towards the CIS National Championship Tournament in Laval, Quebec in early March 2003.
During the summer of 2002, Michael's pursuits took him to Calgary to coach at the Volleyball Position Camp. After the completion of the camps his travels will took him back to Winnipeg to help select and train the Canadian National Youth Women's Team. Finally, Michael returned to Edmonton to prepare the University of Alberta Pandas for a two-week training and competition trip to the internationally very well respected volleyball nation of Japan at the end of August. It was an amazing trip and a very rewarding one for both Michael and the U of A Pandas.
This year, Michael
will again be actively involved with the National Team programs in the summer
and helping young athletes develop and achieve their goals in volleyball.
