Championship Team But Even Better People ...

June 10, 2016

Each Championship has it’s own story especially regarding overcoming adversity and this past season was no different for my friends at Rexona Ades Volei. After an incredibly intense and emotional semi-final win that went the distance (best of 3) with rival Osasco, I wondered just how much gas was left in the tank especially mentally and emotionally. In a winner take all final where there was only one match, Praia proved to be more than a formidable opponent as reflected in the last 3 set scores  26:28; 28-26; 28-26. Rexona’s resiliency and ability to perform at the most crucial times of the match allowed them to capture this year’s Championship, their 11th in total.

It was a privilege to watch the entire coaching staff work their magic, tactically, emotionally, mentally and recovery-wise in order to get the Team to be at their best each day. The players are true professionals who work tremendously hard at their craft. Yet they have a humility to who they are and whether it’s welcoming a visitor or how they are with each other, they are an incredible group of women who are amazing role models for any young girl in Brasil.  9/10 teams would have succumbed to the varying degrees of challenges that faced Rexona en route to this Championship yet the entire Team handled themselves with grace and class.

In the very last meeting prior to the finals, Bernardo began the discussion with his final tactical thoughts. However, the remainder of the meeting had nothing to do with an end result but rather it was about life lessons. Since the first day that I have known him, it has always been about the bigger picture and that night before the most important moment of the season was no different…Championship Team But Even Better People…
